Will Lab Grown Diamond Lose Its Fire? Causes &

Sep 30, 2026

Will lab grown diamond lose its fire? The short answer is: A lab-grown diamond will not permanently lose its inherent fire on its own. Lab diamonds share identical crystal structure and optical properties with natural diamonds. Its fire comes from light refraction and dispersion inside the carbon crystal. It will not fade simply with years of wear. When your diamond appears less brilliant, it is almost always caused by external factors rather than damage to the gemstone itself.

1. What is fire of lab grown diamond

Fire refers to colorful rainbow flashes produced when light enters the gem, refracts and disperses. Lab grown diamond is pure carbon crystal. Its refractive index and dispersion value are exactly the same as natural diamond. Fire is an inborn optical feature of the crystal. It will not fade over time if the crystal stays intact.

2. Reasons why lab diamond looks dull and loses sparkle

2.1 Oil, lotion and dust on the surface (most common)

Hand grease, skincare cream, perfume and cosmetics stick on diamond facets. Oil forms a thin film on the stone surface, blocking light refraction. The fire becomes weak and hazy. This is temporary. After cleaning, full sparkle comes back immediately.

2.2 Scratches, chips and cracks

Lab grown diamond scores 10 on Mohs hardness scale. It is hard but brittle. Heavy impact may cause chipping or nicks on facets. Deep scratches will ruin light reflection path and permanently reduce fire.

2.3 Bent prongs covering the diamond

If metal prongs get deformed, they cover part of the diamond table, blocking incoming light and reducing sparkle. Fixing the setting will restore the visual effect.

2.4 Poor cut

Cut grade directly controls fire. Poorly cut lab grown diamonds leak light from the bottom. They lack fire from day one, instead of losing fire after wearing. Always pick Excellent cut for maximum sparkle.

3. Lab grown diamond vs moissanite on long-term fire performance

Lab diamond has lower dispersion, delivering clean white sparkle with less rainbow flash. Moissanite has higher dispersion with stronger rainbow fire. Neither gem loses fire naturally. However, moissanite attracts grease more easily and needs more frequent cleaning.

4. Maintenance tips to preserve lab diamond fire

  1. Take off your ring while cleaning house, washing hands, applying lotion or perfume, to reduce oil buildup.

  2. Regular cleaning: soak the diamond in warm water mixed with mild dish soap. Gently scrub facets with a soft brush, rinse and dry.

  3. Avoid heavy impact. Diamond is hard but fragile against sharp blows. Do not wear it during heavy work.

  4. Check setting every 6 months at jewelry store, get ultrasonic cleaning and inspect for chips or scratches.
