Many jewelry buyers confuse moissanite with lab-grown diamonds because they look nearly identical and are both affordable lab-created alternatives to natural diamonds. However, moissanite and lab-grown diamonds are completely different gemstones with distinct chemical structures, physical properties, optical performance, certification standards and market values.
Simply put: A lab-grown diamond is a real genuine diamond, while moissanite is a high-performance diamond simulant, not a diamond.
1. Different Essential Materials
Lab-grown diamonds are made of pure carbon with a standard diamond crystal lattice. They share exactly the same chemical, physical and optical characteristics as natural mined diamonds. Lab diamonds are authentic diamonds created in a controlled laboratory environment instead of underground mineral deposits.
Moissanite is composed of silicon carbide (SiC). It is an independent artificial gemstone with excellent transparency and sparkle. Although it visually resembles a diamond, it does not possess a diamond crystal structure and is not classified as a diamond.

2. Hardness and Daily Durability Difference
Hardness determines a gem’s scratch resistance and long-term wear performance.
Lab-grown diamonds score 10 on the Mohs scale, the hardest gemstone on earth. They are extremely scratch-resistant, wear-resistant and durable for lifelong daily wear, maintaining a flawless polished surface for years.
Moissanite scores 9.25 on the Mohs scale, second only to diamond and far harder than cubic zirconia, crystal and glass. It is durable for daily use but slightly less wear-resistant than a true diamond.
3. Different Sparkle and Fire Performance
The most visible difference between the two stones is their light performance.
Lab-grown diamonds have the same dispersion rate as natural diamonds, delivering balanced, pure and elegant brilliance with soft rainbow fire. Their classic, steady and luxurious sparkle fits formal scenarios such as proposals, engagements and weddings.
Moissanite features a much higher dispersion index, producing intense, vivid rainbow flashes. It looks extraordinarily brilliant and eye-catching under light. However, its exaggerated fire is less subtle and lacks the mature, premium texture of a genuine diamond.

4. Certification and Value Gap
Lab-grown diamonds support authoritative diamond certifications. Quality lab diamonds can be certified by IGI, GIA or NGTC, with complete 4C grading, fluorescence records, laser inscription numbers and verifiable official reports. They carry authentic diamond value and eternal commemorative significance.
Moissanite cannot be certified as a diamond. It only receives moissanite-specific test reports without standard diamond 4C grading. It is recognized as a diamond simulant rather than a real diamond in the global jewelry market.
5. Different Wearing Scenarios & Positioning
